RESTORING A CHARACTER TO CONSCIOUSNESS

If a character is unconscious due to System Shock, a Critical Effect result of having his Damage Resistance Total exceeded by a subdual attack, he may be restored to consciousness by another character, who makes his BCS roll for Advanced Medical Skill.

If the character is unconscious due to being in a comatose state, the reason for the coma must be eliminated first. If coma was caused by critical damage to the head, neck or body, the critical Damage must first be healed. If it is due to the character's Damage Resistance Total being exceeded by lethal Damage, the character's current damage total must be lowered to within his Damage Resistance Total.

CPR

A technique, not a drug or device. It uses pressure from external "massage" over the heart (Location 6) to keep it pumping when it has ceased to do so on its own. It is part of the knowledge conferred by Advanced Medical Skill.

The Location must not be in Semi-Rigid or Rigid armor, and the Armor Value may nor exceed the physician's Strength Group in any case. To apply CPR, a BCS roll in Advanced Medical Skill must be made. Success will keep the heart beating for a number of Combat Turns equal to the physician's Deftness Group Effect Die roll, after which a second BCS roll is needed. Each subsequent BCS attempt receives a cumulative penalty of -1. That is, for the second roll, a -1, for the third a -2, and so on. This applies to any character attempting to make the roll and reflects the patient's worsening condition. When a BCS roll is not made, then the patient will not respond to further CPR.

While CPR is being applied successfully, the "clock is stopped" on the results of heart inactivity. The effects of oxygen starvation do not advance past the stage they had reached when CPR was started. This can buy valuable time while preparing Cardiacine or a defibrillator. Of course, applying CPR requires the continuous attention of the physician. He may attend to nothing else while performing this technique on a patient.

At the Gamesmaster's option, a Critical Hit when rolling the BCS for CPR results will permit the patient to make a Health CST. If it succeeds, heart activity will start up again.

Subdual

Subdual heals 1 point every 10 minutes. (1 hour if active)

Immediate First Aid

Each Reduces Lethal Damage by 1 point each:
  • First Aid BCS
  • Bandage
  • 1 Unit of Medical Supplies
Must be applied immediately after combat to be effective.
Note "Medical Supply: First Aid" contains 1 Unit of Medical Supplies and 1 Bandage. First Aid yields a total of 3 points. If the First Aid BCS fails, the character may reroll, but it takes and addtional 10 minutes.

Hospital

Required a dedicated situation with around the clock medical care and full bed rest.

Medical Kit 1 or better

Medical Kit 1 adds +1 to BCS.
Surgery Kit 1 adds +2 to BCS.

Critical Damage

Splits healing between both (rate rounded down). First Aid does not heal critical damage. Some advanced Poly drugs heal some critical damage.

Broken Bones

Broken bones take 100 days - HLH to heal completely. As a general rule, a foot or hand can be used in a limited basis after 6 weeks, but full use returns after 100 days - HLH. Pain medication will allow early use of not fully healed broken bones.

Death

A character is dead if one of the following condition is met:
  • An Attribute drops to zero
  • Has Healing Rate + DRT in lethal damage
  • Has DRT*2 in subdual damage
  • Head is removed.
  • Chest is crushed

A character can be revived if the following are true:
  • Location 5 is intact
  • Lethal Damage is not DRT*2
  • Head is still on body
  • A Poly Drug is available (if critical damage, must heal critical damage)
  • A character with Advanced Medical BCS rolls to administer Cardiacine. Only one shot is allowed. Afflicted character makes a HLH CST.
